Client: Triennale Milano
Marco Williams Fagioli (Zup Design) was selected for the XXI Triennale 2016 with the project MATRIS, exhibited at the Triennale Museum in Milan.
MATRIS applies principles from the technique of engraving to the mass production of lighting fixtures, creating a matrix that allows for limited series reproduction, bridging industrial production and craftsmanship, where each reproduction is both homologous and unique. Starting from industrial scraps not necessarily related to the lighting sector and removed from their functional context, the designer seeks elements to innovate.
The installation consists of 20 lamps created from a matrix made of wood and latex, derived from a mold of studio lights from the 1960s. From this matrix, several molds have been produced, a process of “cloning” the object that—while respecting the logic of mass production—maintains the differences due to the use of concrete and aggregates, materials sensitive to natural shrinkage, cracking, and unpredictable color variations.
